Carrow Cup Rowing Festival 2011

What a great day it was for the Carrow Cup Rowing Festival last Saturday - a crisp morning, flat water and clear blue skies all day! Organised by Norwich Rowing Club, we were treated to the sight of rowers ranging from aged 12 up to several in their seventies, racing over the traditional course from Pull's Ferry to the top of the New Cut (approx 4000m).

The boats covered an equally wide range including racing doubles, quads and fours from all of the local rowing clubs through to 10 spectacular traditional boats including 2 which came all the way up from Chichester for the event.  Of note, the two 6-oared Pilot Gigs (Sowenna and Phantom) were very similar to the boats which would have been used in the 1813 Carrow Cup race!

The fastest coxed four, and the Carrow Cup, was won by Norwich RC in a time of 13m41s.  The fastest traditional boat, on handicap, was Bembridge, a Solent Galley, from Chichester.   Full results are on the Norwich RC website.

The Norfolk Skiff Club report is on their blog here.

Official photos of the event were taken by David Boughey Photographic and can be found here.  There should be one of just about everyone who took part!

Many thanks to Norwich Rowing Club for organising a great event.
