Saturday November 12th saw representatives from Explore Rowing clubs around the country meeting up in London's Russell Square to discuss recreational rowing and related topics. This was a chance to share ideas, solve problems and nework.
Rich started off the day with an update of the programme, showing how the scheme has grown and some of the aims for the future. Anne then took over to present on the topic of A 'Model Club' and Pathways After Learn to Row', initiating discussions on how to retain members after the introductory courses finish.
The afternoon session was on the subject of Events and ways to try something different with rowing. Peter Barker, Captain of Upton RC gave an excellent presentation on the attractions of Touring, inspiring many people in the room to take to new waters and plan a trip. Phil Foster, Chairman of Henley's Phyllis Court rowing section then talked on the subject of Fun Races, making the task of organising their regular club time trials seem extremely manageable with the help of his '14 P's Programme'!
The discussions from the afternoon yielded many possibilities for new events, from a watersport triathlon to an expedition along the Wey. Also, have a look at the photos for the plan of the new Thames Tour featuring a giant guitar!
We hope that the event was useful for all who attended. Now that the new website is up and running, don't forget the Co-ordinator's Group page- it's a great way to stay in touch with each other and to keep sharing ideas.
Finally, for all attendees, those who coudn't make it, or anyone interested in the topics discussed, the presentations and notes can be found below.
All the best,
The Explore Rowing Team
