Leicester RC's Winter Learn to Row Training

December the 21st is the shortest day of the year, which in turn means the least light for rowing. It’s easy if you have a dedicated squad coach and a full indoor fitness regime planned.  However there are plenty of beginners, novice veterans and those who are just a bit unhappy about being out in the dark.  Clubs need to think about keeping this group of people coming down to the club and doing something in a group where possible.  On a visit the other week to Leicester Rowing Club they had set up some circuits indoors.  The group on the Learn to Row course who were unable to get afloat were in the gym, getting fit and also getting to know each other.  Rob the club Captain was pleased at the way the indoor sessions were helping to bond their beginners together.  So don’t lose your newbies over the winter, plan some indoor training.  Watch this space and I will post some ideas and plans in the New Year.

Here in Hexham we did just what Anne suggested, we have been running courses on a Friday, during the daylight at 1- 3 but in January the demand increased for a morning course so we are now running a 10 - 12 and 1 - 3.

If we haven't been able to get out on the water on Fridays we have been doing Ergo work and watching D.V.D.s on technique and posture. (the article in Nov/Dec magazine was very good, but doesn't answer the question of what do you do with a person who has injuries and has, over time, developed a poor, damaged posture? These are generally people who are over 25.

The water sessions have been supplemented by spinning class since October 2011 with core exercises on a Wednesday night at our local Wentworth Leisure Center. This class is for Hexham R.C. members only and is at 7.30 and will run to the end of March 2012. This has been attended by both new to sport and old veterans who have discovered the benefits of such a good workout, not for the feint hearted and definitely a "winter warmer".
