Rowing in a Whaler

As a change from fine boat rowing I had the opportunity to row a whaler, this fairly modern boat was quite different to be on the water in. It was so stable that when we were in the locks, in came the blades and out came the cake and a little 'flask'. We had no need to worry about the balance, it sat beautifully, whether we had 3 or 4 oars on each side, blades in or out. As it was narrower in the bow seat you could even take both blades and scull. On this cold December day there was only one canoe and us on the water, bliss. Often when I think about why I row, its not just the exercise and racing that gives me the bug, its more about being on the water and enjoying myself. I would recommend trying out different types of rowing to everyone.
