Hi there,
Some explanation can be found in the Rules of Racing, section 4-1-7: http://www.britishrowing.org/sites/default/files/pages/15505/Rules%20of%...
To break it down:
The 'M' stands for Masters, the 'W' if it's a women's event, the letters A-J tell you the age classification (sometimes these are combined and you will get eg A/B), if there's an 'N' it's a Novice event, IM3 through to Elite shows the status- ie the number of wins each crew can have, and the last part is the boat type.
I hope this helps!
I'm new to masters rowing and am looking for a definitive guide to the multitude of categories. Can anyone help me understand the difference between a MH/I/J1x, a MWAN2x and a MWBI34x? ;) Thanks!
Anyone interested in the Dutch Masters Open, see here for more information: http://www.dutchmastersopen-rowing.nl/pages/en/home.php
Thank you for your comment Brian. I would have thought that the new anti discrimination policy should apply to a situation where a certain class of members (eg Maters) are banned from the use of boats that are sitting on the racks, but what makes this even worse is that such boats are made freely available for use by beginners/novices. This is blatant discrimination and is very demeaning to those affected who were top level club rowers in the past.
We try to allocate boats to all groups in the club, inevitably the best boats are allocated to crews aiming for Henley but the Captain (who is a Master rower) does his best with limited resources. British Rowing cannot do anything about it, clubs are self funding and have the right to allocate resources as they see fit. I have heard of clubs where the Masters control everything for their benefit so it is not a one sided story.
Has anyone experienced age discrimination in their club regarding access to equipment? Would you consider Maters rowers to be banned from using boats that are available, for example to Novices? Do you think British Rowing can do anything about it?
I live in Cannock/Stafford. Either or both - i would like to row in a coxed four if possible and if anyone is in need of a bow side rower.
Also, I am starting out as a coach and am currently coaching men's novice in university and it is going really well. If anyone knows of a paid position looking for a confident and great coach, please let them know of me or me of them. I will be very grateful. Not looking for schools. thanks, Philip - p_arshad@yahoo.com
Hi
I am Masters C and next year will be D. I have rowed sweep oars for a few years and have I'm now, just starting out in single sculls. I have my own boat intend to compete in the future. I wondering if there are any others out there who are in the same positon as me who would like to get in touch. If you row on the River Seven or row in Birmingham that would be great. It would however be nice to get in touch with any one who is on the same path as me.
Thanks Jilly Bewdley rowing club
As the newly elected Chairman of the Masters Committee I would like to confirm the comment made by our Secretary, Karon, and say that the Handicap Tables are one of our highest priorities and are currently being examined. We wish to ensure that all Masters rowers are happy with the system, know that it is as fair to rowers of different categories as possible and that it is applied by Regatta and Head Organisers in order to give races to as many Masters as possible.
Please let us have your opinions on this website, whether complimentary or otherwise.

Chairman, Masters Committee
Master's racing at 2012 Marlow Regatta (Sunday 17th June)
Following on from the successful trial of Master's events at the 2011 Marlow Regatta, the regatta committee are pleased to announce that the Master's programme on the Sunday is to be expanded to offer a much fuller range of categories. The full list is to be confirmed early in 2012 and will be published on www.themarlowregatta.com.
Racing will also return to a heats & finals format (where enough entries are received) and races will be run in 3 waves during the day (heats and finals in each wave) to avoid doubling up issues.
We hope to see you there, where you will be racing in one of the last races at Dorney Lake before the Olympic regatta.
Having been out of competitive rowing for a number of years my friends and I entered the Vets Head a few weeks ago. Sitting in the queue on the way to the start was always the most nerve wrecking time for me. This year I took my camera with me and took some photos and video footage whilst my crew mates manouvered the boats. I started completely relaxed for a change and the race went really well.
Hi Diane - I am Secretary of the Masters Commission, so will bring your comments to the attention of the Commission. I also have to race in combined handicapped events - and I do understand your frustration!
I know the Handicaps have been looked at in some detail over the last few years, and are in fact reviewed each year, so your comments of Handicap will be taken into account, for the next review.
Regarding Umpires and Stop Watches - I will forward your comments to the Umpires Commission.
comment on masters handicapping
I have been competing in D/E handicapped events quite a bit this year. Looking at the handicap times between D and E it does seem that the same handicap covers a huge range of course times eg the handicap for a course time of 2 mins 50 is the same as the handicap for an event course time of 3 mins 40 - there is a huge difference in a minute and so why is the handicap the same ? There doesnt seem to be this in other consecutive categories eg C to D. I would be grateful if the Masters commission could look into this. Handicapping is a great way to get races but we all want a fair race. I would also ask umpires to carry stop watches . A lot of umpires say that they can count seconds in their heads but observing at regattas it really doesnt happen and frequently the number of seconds is wrong.. In the interest of a fair race please use a stop watch! It is also very confusing to count down when your stop watch counts upwards. Masters commission - please look at why counting down should be used Many people cant do this - I am sure masters crews would be happy for the umpire to count upwards if it means they get it right! Anyone else found these problems?
With a number of different entry categories, it can sometimes be a bit hard to match your competition. Why not post up on here what events you are thinking of entering and then see who else is interested?
