2 March saw Falcon Tourers' first long trip for as long as anyone could remember as the river conditions finally began to improve. A fantastic 27 or so miles from Benson to Henley done super quick thanks to a helpful stream and also Phil at the EA and his team of lock keepers. Hardly anything on the river, just us and the herons.
Looking forward to catching up at Leander on Saturday.
Just to thank Caroline and John Turnbull for arranging an excellent annual dinner last weekend and to thank Guin for her inspirational after dinner speech. Guin offered a great motto for touring rowing "beyond the lock" - though we may not all make it as far as The Maldives ...
Just a quick note to let everyone know that I'm told there's only a few places left on the two FISA tours this year so if you'd like to get involved I'd suggest booking sooner rather than later.
Hi Tourers! The 2012 annual touring rowers' dinner will be on Saturday 24th March at Leander Club, with guest speaker Guin Batten.
The recent Goring Gap BC Touring weekend was a great success - a group of GGBC rowers made the very best of the recent sunny weather and rowed all the way to Wargrave, camped over night, and rowed back the following day. A great way to see some new stretches of river and have a cook over an open fire!
The GGBC tubs are ideal for this kind of trip, fast, stable and able to carry lots of camping gear.
It takes 3-4 hours of steady rowing including locks to travel the 15kms.....so plenty of time to call in for refreshments on the way and watch the abundant wildlife.
Many thanks to Shiplake College and Wargrave boat club for their hospitality.
GGBC run two short touring weekends per year - not too strenuous, and lots of fun. If you are interested please drop us a line.
There are touring routes and lots of links on the subject on http://www.goringgapbc.org.uk/Touring.htm
The French have a very active touring community - see the links for more information......fine weather, great hospitality and superb rivers and scenery
I guess as more tours develop this will be less of a problem as there will be more and more opportunities to try touring. (Though obviously it would be good for as many people as possible to be able to go on THE British Rowing Tour too)
Brian - perhaps we could get an extra tour going on the Dee this summer at a better time? (with Grosvenor's new boats and Warrington's nearby it might be possible to have a reasonable number of people for a weekend tour)
Last year people complained that it clashed with the Great River Race! And if it's earlier in the summer, then you risk clashing with UK regattas. There just doesn't seem to be a weekend when there are no other events.
Why does the tour always seem to clash with the World Masters? Some of us are still competing but still use/have touring boats.
Grosvenor's new boats are now at the club
