Many of the clubs on the Thames are incredibly lucky that they can have a wonderful afternoon or day outing and easily stop for a beer or coffee along the way. One of my favourites is rowing from Maidenhead Rowing Club to Marlow a distance of about 8 miles. Setting off from Maidenhead you pass under the A4 bridge then row up to Boulters Lock, after passing through the lock the stretch of water between Boulters and Cookham lock is very tranquil and beautiful with Cliveden House, which used to be the home of the Astors making a fabulous backdrop. About a mile after Cookham Lock you come across the Bounty Inn, which is only accessible by either foot or boat, a quirky pub and very friendly. If you don’t get waylaid at the Bounty do continue on to Marlow. Once though Marlow lock the scenery and weir are eyecatching with the beautiful St Mary’s church on the bank. At Marlow you can either stop at the rowing club or watersports centre and walk into the town for coffee. A wonderful days rowing with plenty of picnic areas along the route.

Once you pass Marlow it is worth carrying on to the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey, which is a very interesting old (13th century I think) building in lovely grounds. They also have a restaurant and cafeteria.
